Latihan TOEFL Reading 17: Epigenetics and Gene Expression

Baca passage berikut dengan teliti, lalu kerjakan 15 soalnya. Jawaban dan pembahasan bisa dibuka setelah kamu mencoba sendiri.

While the DNA sequence within nearly all of an organism's cells remains identical, cells throughout the body differ dramatically in structure and function, from neurons to skin cells to muscle fibers. This apparent paradox is resolved by epigenetics, the study of heritable changes in gene expression that occur without alterations to the underlying DNA sequence itself.

Epigenetic modifications, such as the chemical addition of methyl groups to DNA, can effectively switch genes on or off by altering how accessible they are to the cellular machinery that reads genetic instructions. These modifications help explain how a single fertilized egg can develop into the vastly different cell types that make up a complex organism, since different genes become active or silenced in different tissues.

Increasingly, researchers have found that epigenetic patterns can be influenced by environmental factors, including diet, stress, and exposure to toxins, and that some of these acquired patterns may be passed to subsequent generations. This possibility of environmentally influenced inheritance has prompted renewed scientific interest in questions once considered largely settled, regarding the relative contributions of nature and nurture to an organism's traits.
